Where to Find Internships
Last updated November 20, 2023
If you're looking for a way to gain work experience for your professional resume or college applications, why not consider an internship? Internships offer valuable hands-on work experience in a variety of different professions and fields to help people learn and make valuable connections. If you're considering looking for an internship, here are a few great places to start your search!
Second Day
Second Day has a hiring platform focused on making social impact jobs accessible to more diverse communities of young talent. They want to build a future generation of nonprofit CEOs, social entrepreneurs, change makers, and activists who reflect the communities that they serve and create the long-standing change we desperately need. They host internships and fellowships all year long!
Handshake
Handshake is one of the most popular platforms for college students to search for job opportunities, but did you know that they offer internship opportunities as well? What makes Handshake unique is that you can connect directly with companies to find an internship or job, receive messages from employers, and connect with alumni from your school who work at a company you may be interested in. Handshake is a fully gated platform, which means you have to sign up first in order to see what jobs and internships are available. And though it is free to use, Handshake is exclusively for college students and recent college graduates, so you must have a college email address to sign up. Once you are in, complete your profile for personalized job and internship recommendations.
Idealist.org
If you have a passion for making an impact in your community then Idealist is the perfect place to search for internships. Idealist is a job, internship, and volunteer platform that is exclusively for those interested in the nonprofit and social services sector. No sign up is required, but you have the option to create a free profile so you can save the opportunities you're interested in. When you are ready to search for internships, just type in your city and browse the opportunities in your area.
WayUp
WayUp is a job and internship platform for college students and recent graduates to search for job and internship opportunities, access career advice, and connect directly with top employers. Similarly to Handshake, WayUp is a gated platform, so you must register and complete a profile before viewing internship and job opportunities. Having a college email address is NOT a requirement, so anyone can sign up. Once your profile is complete, you will have access to a dashboard of jobs and internships, where you’ll see opportunities that match your profile.
Your school’s career center
If you're a college student, be sure to check out your campus career center. In addition to helping you with fine-tuning your resume and helping you prepare for job interviews, many college career centers have great online job and internship boards where you can search for opportunities based on your major or areas of interest. Additionally, career centers have relationships with employers and often know of internship and job opportunities that may be available exclusively for students at your school. It’s a free resource to tap into, so be sure to head to your school's career center ASAP!
Through your network
You may already have connections you aren’t aware of! If you are looking for an internship, start building your network by letting trusted adults and educators in your life know what sort of opportunities you are looking for. You never know who they may be connected to. You can also be intentional on who you reach out to. For example, if you are looking for an internship in media or journalism, you can reach out to your school’s yearbook or student newspaper advisor to see if they have any helpful connections. Once you secure a connection, set up an informational interview to learn more about their profession and any opportunities in the field they may be aware of.
