How to Earn Extra Cash In College
Last updated August 17, 2023
It’s no secret that there are a lot of costs associated with attending college. From books and class fees to food and other general living expenses, costs can add up quickly for students. If you’re wondering how to make some extra money to pay for these things and save up in case of an emergency, we’re here to help! Here are some ways (on & off campus) to earn some extra cash in college!
Find a job or internship
Most students in college work a part-time job or internship to pay for school and life necessities. Read our ultimate guide on finding jobs and internships in college here - we break down where to find jobs and internships, what you’ll need to apply to them, and essential tips to rock your interviews and make a great impression on employers!
Get a work-study job
Work-study provides students with employment opportunities both on and off campus to help pay for necessary expenses. Work-study eligibility is determined by completing or renewing your FAFSA. Question 31 on the FAFSA asks “Are you interested in being considered for work-study?” - Be sure to check “Yes” if you are.
Note: Because work-study eligibility is determined by filing the FAFSA, undocumented students do not qualify for it.
Start a side hustle
Capitalize on what you do well outside of academics. Are you the GOAT when it comes to styling or cutting hair? Are you really creative when it comes to decorating graduation caps? Do you know how to make really cool looking posters or flyers? Can you make awesome videos or take amazing pictures? Try turning these skills into a side hustle! Side hustles are great for students who don’t want the structure or schedule of a typical part-time job, want to be their own boss, or for those under the age of 18.
Become a Student Assistant
Student Assistant is a temporary, part-time position reserved for students who are enrolled, at a minimum, half-time with the primary goal of obtaining a degree. A job as a Student Assistant could entail helping teachers in their classrooms, working in labs, grounds keeping, secretary work for departments, and more. Check in with your school’s career center to learn more about available positions.
