SAT Registration: Deadlines, Costs, Fee Waivers, & More
Last updated August 20, 2024
Getting ready to take the SAT? We share what you need to know about SAT registration: from deadlines and costs to fee waivers and more!
When do I register for the SAT?
The SAT is offered seven times a year and will be offered digitally moving forward. The deadline to register for a test date is usually about a month in advance. College Board lists all of the test dates in a school year, including the registration deadline for each, to help you plan ahead. If you miss the deadline and there are still spots available, you may be able to register late (although there is usually a fee).
If you plan to apply to college through early action or early decision, we recommend taking the SAT before December. If you're applying to college under regular decision deadlines, we recommend that you plan to take the SAT before January.
SAT is going digital
As of 2024, the SAT has gone digital, but is still taken at testing centers and schools. Here's what you can expect on the digital exam:
- The SAT will be taken on a laptop or tablet. Students without a laptop or tablet can request one from College Board. You must do so at least 30 days prior to your exam date.
- The exam is now shorter, at around 2 hours and 14 minutes.
- Reading passages have been reduced.
- The new exam will use adaptive testing. This means the questions throughout the exam will change depending on how you answered the previous questions. Read more from College Board.
- Calculators can be used for the entire math section.
