Build Study Skills
Everyone learns differently! As you get settled into high school, find study methods that work best for you. Start by trying out a few of our study tips and learning about formatting your study guide for class!
Use Free Study Resources
Free study help is a click away! Websites like Khan Academy and YouTube channels like CrashCourse have great study help in a lot of different subjects. When you’re getting ready to study for a test, look online!
Manage Your Time
A lot of high school students balance more than just their classes! Building time management skills now can help you take care of all your responsibilities. Try doing one of these to build your time management skills:
- Create a to-do list. Every day, write down what you need to do both in and out of school. Having it all in one place can help you know what to take care of first.
- Stay organized with a planner or planning app. This is similar to creating a to-do list, but instead of writing down tasks for just one day, try writing them down for a week or a month. You’ll be organized and know what you have to take care of!
Use Your School’s Resources
Many high schools offer free resources that students can use, so take note of the ones that yours offers. Your school may have resources like:
- School library to study in peace and quiet, and get help from a librarian if you’re looking for something.
- Tutoring center to get help on projects and assignments.
- Computer lab to work on assignments, write papers, and print homework.
- College and career center to talk to a counselor about all of your options once you graduate high school.
- Counseling center to receive some extra support if you need it.
Talk To Your Teachers
Your teachers want you to succeed, so don’t be afraid to talk to them if you need some help. Here are ways you can start talking to your teachers:
- Engage in class. Participate in class discussions, ask questions, and listen. Teachers notice!
- Visit office hours. Some of your teachers may have office hours or times when they're available to help students outside of class. Visit your teacher if you have a question or need help!
- Keep them informed and ask for help when needed. If you’re struggling in or outside of class, it’s helpful to let your teacher know. You can also ask them for help.
- Say thank you! Saying thank you goes a long way! If your teacher took the time to help you, listen to you, or offer you advice, be sure to thank them.
