9 Tips to Rock Your First Day on the Job
Last updated March 7, 2024
The first day of your new job can be both exciting and stressful. You’re probably excited to start working and making money, but also feel a bit nervous about making a good first impression. Here are our tips to rock your first day at your new job!
Dress the part
Feel confident on your first day by choosing an outfit that is appropriate for your new job. Does your company have a formal dress code or a casual one? If you are not sure, reach out to your HR manager or browse the company’s website or social media pages for inspiration. Also, it’s never a bad idea to dress more formally and then adjust after you see what your coworkers are wearing. Check out our video on office attire to get more information and inspiration!
Arrive early
Map out your route to work in advance so you know exactly where to go and how long it will take to get there. Be sure to arrive a few minutes early to give yourself time to freshen up. If you have a remote job and your first day of work is at home instead of the office, wake up early to set up your workspace and test your technology to make sure there are no issues.
Bring your work documents
Some employers use the first day of work to onboard you to the team. That may include going over the employee handbook, introducing you to your team, and completing new hire paperwork. Be work-ready by making sure you have the right documents with you, like your government ID (driver's license or passport), social security card, and bank account information if your company requires you to use direct deposit.
Be ready to interact
You might be introduced to a lot of people on your first day who are eager to learn more about you. Remember to smile, give a strong handshake, and have your elevator pitch ready.
Ask questions
There’s always a steep learning curve when starting a new job. Now is the perfect time to ask lots of questions, especially since managers expect you to have them. There’s no such thing as a silly question, so ask away! The goal is to better understand how the company operates and how to do your job. Take notes
After asking questions and receiving a lot of new information, take notes about what you've learned so you have something to refer to later on.
Mute your phone
Before starting your shift, put your phone on do not disturb or turn it off altogether to avoid any unnecessary distractions.
Take breaks
Find some time to be alone, take a few deep breaths, eat or drink water, and refresh before resuming your work day.
Be yourself
Don't be anyone but yourself! You were hired because you can do the job well. While new job jitters are normal, remember to be kind to and patient with yourself as you adjust.
