Visiting Colleges

Last updated December 23, 2019

Visiting a college is much more than a campus tour. It’s vital to actually visit the campuses you are considering since you will call it home for 4 (or more) years. Here are some things to check off your list when visiting your potential new home!

Explore Academic Programs

If you have an idea of what you want to major in make an appointment with the department to learn more about the academic program requirements and support to ensure that it is in line with your career goals and aspirations.

Check out the Student Center

They say work hard, play hard right? While academics will be sole focus in college a part of determining if a college is a good fit is making sure the campus culture is a fit too. Check out the campus hangouts and students spaces to get a sense of the day to day life of students on that campus.

Visit admissions and financial aid.

Typically during a scheduled campus visit, colleges will provide a presentation about the application and financial aid process, campus life and student opportunities. These sessions are your chance to get the inside scoop to make your decision easier.

Go straight to the source, ask the students.

College students are typically pretty friendly, besides they’ve been in your position before! If you have a specific question, why not ask a student passing by or having lunch a quick question about their experience at the college.

Good note taking is key in college, start now.

Document your experience on campus in a notebook by taking notes about the pros and cons of each campus experience. This will come in handy when you need to compare and contrast your top choices.
