Introducing the two #WeBelongInCollege Scholarship winners from August 2020! Congratulations to Grace, Meril, and Yahshanda! Your stories are truly inspirational and will help change the lives of many!
Grace’s #WeBelongInCollege Story
After being physically abused by a member of her family, Grace’s mental health deteriorated. She knew she had to escape her home, so she moved out of her house and had to figure out how to support herself. Even though she had always dreamed of going to college, she started to question if she was capable of working and going to school at the same time. Watch this inspiring story about a young girl who refused to give up on her college dreams.
Meril's #WeBelongInCollege Story
In Meril's story, they explain that “the biggest secret of my life is that I’m not a girl.” Meril first came out as non-binary in 9th grade and uses they/them pronouns. When Meril started to fill out college applications, they were confronted again and again with the boxes asking about their gender identity. Meril struggled with this and decided to write in the college applications as she/her and as a result, started to question if they would be able to feel like they belonged in college. Meril's journey will inspire you.
Yahshanda's #WeBelongInCollege Story
Yahshanda grew up in an abusive household. When she arrived at college, she felt lonely and sought comfort in alcohol. In her story she explains how she was able to heal after realizing that “pain is not where the journey ends, it's where it begins.”
