Academic Advising

Last updated December 20, 2019

Forming a close working relationship with your academic adviser is a great way to set yourself up for success in college. They can help you choose the right classes, help you turn around your grades in challenging classes, and connect you to resources on campus.

Make an appointment with your academic adviser early or as soon as scheduling is available

It can get competitive getting the course you want and need. Seeing your advisor early can be the difference between getting in a class and being on the waitlist.

Your academic advisor is your passenger, you are the driver of this process so do your research before you meet with your advisor.

Search websites, department resources, to build your plan and then use your advisor to help you bring your plan to life.

Ask questions!

After all, you are paying for your education so if there are parts of the academic advising that aren’t clear or in line with your goals, talk it out!

Ask your advisor to do a degree audit with you every time you meet.

It’s important that you stay on track to graduate and are aware of the progress that you are making towards completion. Time is money!

Inquire about internships, scholarships, and programs specific to your area of interest/major.

You never know what opportunities may be available.

Review your plan with a mentor, trusted friend, or even a parent.

It’s always important to bounce your ideas, dreams, and goals with someone who knows you well.
