How to Effectively Find Scholarships

One of the most important components of being successful in your scholarship hunt is having an eye for the right fit -- meaning scholarships that fit your interests, experience, and goals -- over quantity.

At the same time, it’s extremely common to not receive a scholarship after having done ALL your research, feeling confident that it fits your experiences/goals, giving the essay everything you’ve got, etc.. Most scholarships make many fewer awards than they have qualified applicants for, so you are not alone.

But as much as effective scholarship hunting involves filtering for quality scholarships, it also requires persistence. You won’t win every scholarship you apply for, and it isn’t personal when you don’t win.

With these two priorities for applying to scholarships in mind (finding good fit scholarships and persistence), here are some tips on how to effectively find and start applying for scholarships.

  1. Start your search with a good scholarship database

Thousands of organizations and companies offer scholarships every year. Some of the big name scholarships are easier to track, but in general you want to search for scholarships with a reliable database that has consistently updated scholarships with accurate deadlines, and respects your personal data.

Get Schooled recommends JLV’s Scholarship database. They don’t require creating an account and are completely free to use. All scholarships listed include links to applications and up-to-date scholarship deadlines. If you want to try other databases, check our list of our favorite scholarship aggregators here.

2. Find out which scholarship categories fit your interests, background, and goals

Scholarships are typically organized by category - for example, scholarships for future STEM majors, scholarships for nurses, scholarships for students active in community service, scholarships for writers and/or artistic students, etc. Figure out what categories resonate with what you’re interested or have experience in, and start picking potential scholarships accordingly.Your odds of successfully earning a scholarship increase right off the bat when you apply to a scholarship that aligns with your interests, background, and/or goals.

3. Have a trusted friend, teacher, family member, OR Get Schooled review your scholarship application!

It’s always extremely beneficial to have another set of eyes look over your scholarship applications. Especially if the reviewer has experience in the scholarship space. Have a friend, teacher, or family member proof-read your application and any scholarship essays for errors, coherency, and overall quality.

Get Schooled can also review your scholarship application and any essays for free! We’ll provide actionable feedback and suggestions within one week of submission :)
