Healthy Living In College
Last updated January 28, 2021
You might not think healthy living and college student belong in the same sentence, but figuring out how to stay healthy in college is a huge part of your college success. College can take a toll on your physical and mental health if you don’t prioritize it.
Whether you are grabbing take out from the Loker Student Union food court or joining your classmates for study group in the Leo F. Cain Library, being around so many people means sharing and spreading germs. While we generally think sharing is caring, when it comes to college cooties, you want to keep them to yourself! And get yourself to the health center!
Thankfully, the Student Health and Psychological Services Center provides free or low cost basic medical care to students.
“Students can get their physicals here, gynecology exams, and they can get birth control and some prescriptions. It’s all basic care.” Dr. Monica Rosas Baines, health center psychologist shared. “Something I didn’t know until after a few years here is our pharmacist offers medication at a greatly reduced price so even over the counter medication is significantly cheaper which is great for students.”
Dr. Monica is one of the psychologist at the health center. She also wants students to know about the mental health services available free of charge.
The Student Heath and Psychological Services Center also provides support groups, mental health screenings and other resources to help you manage stress, anxiety, and your adjustment to life as a college student.
“We provide crisis management and individual counseling,” added psychologist, Dr. Norma Quintero. “We have groups devoted to difference topics across the semester. We provide workshops in terms of education to overcome anxiety or depression and relationship issues. It’s quite an array of services and it’s all free to students.”
