Complete Your FAFSA to Get the Detroit Promise

Last updated March 1, 2021

If you’ve done it all – you checked out whether you qualify for a 2-year or 4-year Detroit Promise, you’ve seen which colleges you can attend with the Detroit Promise, you created your account, and you’ve met all residency requirements – you’re ready to apply! But how?

Here’s a step-by-step guide to completing the FAFSA

Before you begin, make sure you have everything you need to complete the FAFSA

  1. Visit and click “Start Here”
  2. Click “I am a Student” and create an FSA ID if you haven’t already. Your FSA ID is your FAFSA log-in!
  3. Then, work through your section of the form. List every school you might be applying to under “colleges”. When it asks about YOUR income, make sure you only list money YOU earn! Your parents will report their income in the next section!
  4. Then, pass it on to your parents when you get to their section. They’ll use their Income Tax Returns to fill in their section.

If you have ANY questions at all while completing your FAFSA (or while registering for the Detroit Promise!) text “Detroit” to 33-55-77 to chat with an advisor
