Communication can happen using more than just words. In fact, only 7% of all communication is verbal while 93% is non-verbal, and most of is through body language or tone of voice. In business, it’s important to be aware of your body language because it heavily influences how others receive or interpret what you’re trying to communicate – even before you speak.
For example, if you first smile, then enthusiastically say hello to someone, that person will likely identify you as friendly. However, if you first roll your eyes, then dryly say hello, you may be perceived as rude or uninviting. In both instances you said hello, but the body language and tone of voice were different each time, thus sending two different messages.
