What Makes An Effective Teacher
All around us are excellent educators who are changing the world one student and one classroom at a time. At #QuieroAprender, we’re all for honoring them and their hard work. From the young teachers in the beginning stages of their career to others like Herlinda Garcíaa in Texas who has been in the field for more than 50 years, we appreciate them all today more than ever.
Teaching, at its core, is an act of love. It’s something you must have great passion for in order to do well. Great teachers are motivated to see the next generation succeed, and they do everything in their power to make sure this happens. But at the end of the day, there must be a partnership between teacher and student. For teachers to succeed in their role, students must do their part to heed instruction and learn to apply it.
Have you ever had a teacher believe in you and your potential? For some students, it was a teacher who made all the difference in their life. It was a teacher who became their bridge to success and embracing their full potential. So how do these teachers do it?
Here are 4 characteristics of an effective teacher:
An effective teacher respects all their students.
An effective teacher understands that every student has ideas and opinions that matter and can be deemed valuable. They listen and show respect, providing a great example to all in their classroom. A great teacher knows the importance of respectfully creating a positive and welcoming atmosphere in which students can thrive.
An effective teacher is accessible.
A great teacher must be approachable. This is incredibly important if they want to truly make an impact in the lives of their students. Teachers that make themselves accessible to their pupils are in a position to give advice, direction, and counsel on matters that concern the student and their best interest. When this sort of accessibility is there, students are given a reason to trust and listen to guidance.
An effective teacher expects excellence for their students.
A teacher that makes their expectations known sets their students up for success. They emphasize the importance of achievement in education and make sure students understand what is expected of them. A great teacher knows how to push students and also how far they can push.
An effective teacher always remains professional.
A great teacher, naturally, must be a skilled communicator. They are always clear and know how to provide directions in a professional manner and in a way students can appreciate. No matter what, a great teacher is emotionally strong and knows how to remain cool and calm under tense situations.
