Summer is finally here! What are your goals for how you’ll spend it? Obvs, we’re going to want to have some fun - especially after this garbage fire of a year! But now is also a great time to start, or continue, working toward long term goals. Whether you’re looking to apply to college, start college, find a job or career, or something else, we’re here to help.
Whatever your goals for this summer may be, these free mobile apps can help you track your goals and consistently make progress toward achieving them.
Way of Life (iOS, Android)
Achieving goals is, more often than not, a matter of forming good, strong habits. Want to learn Spanish? Or Guitar? The best way to improve is to consistently set aside time for practice every day, or several times a week. Way of Life lets you track visually whether or not you’ve put in time towards achieving your goal every day. A day you practiced Spanish, for example, is a day you would mark as green. Forgot to practice? That day is marked as red.
Over the course of a month, you’ll be able to see how consistently you worked at achieving your goal. You can also set up reminders through the app to help keep you on track, and archive goals you’ve accomplished.
Similar to Way of Life, Strides lets you track habits, but it also helps you set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely) goals. You’ll set a goal, choose a target date, and then Strides tracks the average progress you’re making over time toward achieving it. The app uses reminders and milestones so you’ll always know if you’re on pace to accomplish your goal by the target date.
Setting goals is easy, but it isn’t always obvious how to make progress towards achieving them without someone there to show you. Fabulous, built in collaboration with Duke University’s Behavioral Economics Lab, guides you through how to create scientifically proven good habits through “journeys”.
Say, for example, that you want to learn how to meditate to so you can be relaxed before tests. The meditation “journey” will coach you through how to do it properly. Check Fabulous out if you want science-backed guidance in creating healthy habits that help you achieve your goals.
Habitica (iOS, Android)
Habitica takes interactive goal tracking even further by turning your real-life actions and into a video game. The app turns the tasks you need complete every day to make progress toward your goal into little monsters that you have to conquer. The better you are at completing daily tasks and progressing toward your goal, the more powerful your character becomes. If your progress in real life starts to falter, your character starts backsliding in the game. Check it out if you’re looking for a fun, gamified way to motivate yourself to be more productive.
ATracker helps you meet your goals by tracking how you spend your time. You enter in the activities you do each day, tap the app when you begin an activity, and again when you finish, and as you track your actions, the app provides you charts that help you identify visually where you could be spending your time more productively.
