Finding Internet Access

Last updated March 25, 2020

As this crisis unfolds, new resources emerge every day. We are constantly updating this and other pages as news breaks.

Internet access is an essential commodity under quarantine. Whether you’re trying to adapt to your school’s switch to distance learning, trying to find a job, need to use the internet to access other key educational resources, or just stay in contact with friends and loved ones, here are a few ways to get free access to the internet.

Comcast and Spectrum are making their public Wi-Fi HOTSPOTS free nationwide

As part of their response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Comcast and Spectrum are making all of their public Wi-Fi hotspots across the U.S. free to use - even if you don’t have a Comcast or Spectrum subscription. Their hotspots are typically located in dense urban areas, parks, and malls. Click here for a map of all available hotspots from Comcast.

Several internet providers are offering free HOME internet service to students

Comcast is providing its Internet Essentials wi-fi service free of charge for all qualifying low-income families for the next two months (normally it’s $9.95/month). If you or your family receive SNAP, free lunch, medicaid, or social security benefits - your family qualifies. Spectrum, an internet service provider, is similarly offering free Wi-Fi and broadband service to any students who don’t currently use their service.

Struggling with phone bills or data caps? T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, and Xfinity have promised to halt service terminations and waive late payment fees for individuals affected by COVID-19

Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T are also temporarily significantly increasing data usage caps.
