Study Skills for AP Exams

AP exams are the big, stressful conclusion to a long year of challenging AP classes. High stakes (college credit is on the line!), lots to remember (the exams are cumulative!), and rarely is there ever enough time to prepare. Fortunately, there are tried and true strategies for how to prepare effectively for your AP exams, check them out below!

First, find an online resource to help you prepare - here are two options:

Khan Academy

Khan Academy has guides for every single AP class and exam. They’re thorough, start from the basics, and best of all, free! Click “courses” in the top left to see each AP subject.

  • You work at your own pace
  • Provides specific examples of how to answer test questions in video format
  • Requires an account (but it’s free!)

Quizlets

Quizlets offers a variety of learning methods - Flashcards, randomized tests, and two study games. They have premade resources available for most AP subjects, or you can make your own!

  • Students can share their work with others
  • Available on mobile devices
  • Requires an account (but it’s free!)
  • Premade resources can be made by other users and may contain typos

Now, create a study plan (and execute it effectively!)

Here’s how:

  1. Set up a designated learning space (distraction free!)
  2. Schedule time every day to focus on studying AP content
  3. Establish what you need to learn with the AP exam in mind by reviewing notes, past quizzes and tests, and your class syllabus.
  4. Read the AP course and exam description
  5. Take practice exams
  6. Create virtual “study groups” with classmates

And above all, don’t be afraid to reach out

  • Email your teacher with questions
  • Reach out to classmates
  • Text “Hello” to 33-55-77 to get 1:1 help preparing for your AP exams from our college coaches!
