Meet our $1,000 No Essay Scholarship Winner of the Month of Decemebr: Daisy A.

1. How did you hear about Get Schooled?

I first heard about Get Schooled through the program I work for (Encounter to Excellence or ETE) because they were promoting it to our 2019-2020 cohort of 900 students.

2. What’s your favorite thing about Get Schooled?

My favorite thing about Get Schooled is the topics they present to students which are extremely relevant to their everyday life, these topics range from Self Care, How to Enhance Study Skills, learning which college to choose, and even creating resumes. I have found these topics to be extremely useful in the past and present and I also adore how Get Schooled always has incentives such as 5$ to 10$ gift cards or tote bags.

3. What does winning this scholarship mean to you?

This scholarship means everything to me, it is the first scholarship I have ever received and I never thought that I'd be able to actually win one. Now that I have one foot in the door, I know I am capable of anything I set my mind too and I will be applying for future scholarships with Get Schooled and other programs.

4. What do you want to study in college? Why?

Currently, I am enrolled at California State University Dominguez Hills as a full-time student. I am studying English Education with a minor in Environmental Studies. I want to become an English teacher for high school students and eventually move my way up to become a professor at a Cal State University. I want to concentrate in this area because I genuinely enjoy teaching and inspiring the youth because they are the future of generations to come. I know how difficult it is to find that motivation to continue going to school or finding something one truly wants to pursue as a career. Many people usually dread English classes, I am determined to make these classes interactive, enjoyable, and an experience that can stay with them for life.

5. When will you attend college?

I am currently a Sophomore in college and my estimated graduation date is Spring 2022.

6. What keeps you coming back to Get Schooled?

The one thing that keeps me coming back to Get Schooled is the opportunity to always learn something new, I highly value education and if I can get reliable and authentic guidance as to how I can improve my way of learning, listening, and engaging I will seize the moment.

7. What content topics do you like reading about most?

The topics I love reading most about are how to earn and save money in college and how to renew FAFSA. These are extremely common for college students and it is not easy to always budget one’s income because there are constant expenses such as rent, textbooks, groceries, and other unexpected expenses. On the other hand, sometimes students do not know how to renew or register for FAFSA. I have been there and I understand how intimidating it can be. Therefore, to have a resource like Get Schooled that guides you on these topics proves to be extremely useful.

8. Have you recommended Get Schooled to anyone (friends, family, other students)?

I have recommended Get Schooled to the 25 college freshmen I oversee.

9. What other content topics would you like to see on Get Schooled?

I would like to see more of Self Care topics because it is important for students to recover after tedious and long hours of class to work and keep functioning normally.

Meet our $1,000 No Essay Scholarship Winner for the Month of November: Dante G.

1. How did you hear about Get Schooled?

My Middle and High School both use the site!

2. What’s your favorite thing about Get Schooled?

It makes learning about college fun. I also really like the Rewards Store.

3. What does winning this scholarship mean to you?

A lot!! I'm very thankful!

4. What do you want to study in college?

I am interested in computer networking, technology, youth or children's ministry, and biblical studies. Why? Because I feel like I'm called by God for jobs in both of those fields.

5. When will you attend college?

Fall 2020

6. Which college will you go to?

Community College of Rhode Island for 2 years and then transfer to Northpoint Bible College for 4 years.

7. What keeps you coming back to Get Schooled?

The badges! I especially enjoy the 2019 Fall Attendance badge and the SAT badges. The SAT badges were fun and I actually learned test-taking tips.

8. What content topics do you like reading about most?

Content about colleges and jobs!

9. Have you recommended Get Schooled to anyone (friends, family, other students)?

Yes, I highly recommend becoming part of the Get Schooled family!

Meet our $1,000 No Essay Scholarship Winner for the Month of October: Daniela L.

1. How did you hear about Get Schooled?

When I was in middle school, we were told about Get Schooled in class one day. They told us about all of the things it can help you with, and how you can earn points in return of taking part in the articles and discussion they offer. I thought that it was a really useful and cool resource so I constantly would take part in it. I genuinely enjoyed it.

2. What’s your favorite thing about Get Schooled?

My favorite part about Get schooled is how much effort goes into everything offered, and how well rounded the offers are. For example, you can find tools and articles relating to finding the right college but also on SAT help, how to keep your mental health in check, how to make friends, help with homework and writing essays, job & internship tips! Everything is right there at your fingertips being updated and expanded regularly.

3. What does winning this prize mean to you?

Winning this scholarship means so much. It not only helps me be one step closer to not having debt post-graduation, but it also gives me hope. Being able to go to college is a privilege that I am well aware of, and I am very grateful to be granted the opportunity to be able to live out that privilege.

4. What do you want to study in college? Why?

I love film with all of me. I genuinely don’t know what else there is for me, it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do. I want to work in the industry and learn it’s inner workings and make a difference in such a white male-dominated field. I believe that with a lot of hard work and the right connections, I can make it as a cinematographer. I just fell in love with cinematography and I don’t ever see myself falling out of love with it. It’s so beautiful. Film takes strong plots, detailed writing, purposeful camera movement, and an incredible score and turns it into an impactful story. It’s the right mix of documenting and storytelling with both the camera & acting. It just blows my mind.

5. When will you attend college?

I am currently in the running start program at a community college but will be planning on transferring and attempting University in the fall of 2020.

6. Which college will you go to?

I am not sure what college I will be attending yet unfortunately. I have sent out my applications and will make a decision once my letters are in :)

7. What keeps you coming back to Get Schooled?

I know I have already mentioned this, but the resources! Get schooled is an incredible program that I have talked to so many people about. It has taught me so much, much of which is not taught in schools. It has helped me feel more secure in my plans and in my path regarding school, career, and life. It’s also just really fun as well to earn points, but it’s the absolute best when you take part in a contest and you end up winning and your teacher's wallet gets a bit heavier :) Those kinds of beautiful things wouldn’t have occurred if not for Get Schooled.

8. What content topics do you like reading about most?

I read the news a lot, articles and such. I like to know what’s occurring around the world, become more conscious of the things outside of your bubble. This includes topics such as politics, social justice, human rights, etc. On the complete other side of the spectrum, I also read a lot of self-help related books. I love Brene Brown’s writing, and I just finished Michelle Obama’s ‘Becoming.’ I love anything that makes you think, and this goes for films too.

9. Have you recommended Get Schooled to anyone (friends, family, other students)?

Yes! Since middle school I have spoken about Get schooled to friends and peers. Whenever someone had a question or concern regarding something I had read or learned about on Get schooled, I would take the opportunity to tell them about it and show them what exactly helped me.

10. What other content topics would you like to see on Get Schooled?

I feel that Get schooled is so well rounded already!

11.Anything else you would like to add?

Thank you! Muchas Gracias! Дякую! Merci!

Meet our $1,000 No Essay Scholarship Winner for the Month of September:  Keyan G.

1. How did you hear about Get Schooled?

I heard about Get Schooled from one of my teachers at school. She told me there was a number that I could text to get help on school related stuff. I texted you guys and you were super helpful!

2. What’s your favorite thing about Get Schooled?

I like that I can text the Get Schooled counselors any time and get answers to my questions. I asked about medical schools in Louisiana and you guys were able to give me two really good options.

3. What does winning this prize mean to you?

Honestly, this is the kind of stuff that I wasn’t expecting to win. I got a text about your $1,000 No Essay Scholarship and kind of entered without much expectation. I know that random drawings are really hard to win, so I didn’t expect much. When I got the text saying that I won, I was really surprised and excited. I feel blessed and grateful!

4. What do you want to study in college?  Why?

I want to become an anesthesiologist. When I was younger, I wanted to be a heart surgeon but when my school gave us the opportunity to see a live procedure from behind a glass, I got to see an anesthesiologist prepare the patient and it interested me. After learning more about what anesthesiologists do, I decided that that’s what I wanted to do. I am hoping to major in biology or chemistry, one of the two.

5. When will you attend college?

Fall 2020

6. Which college will you go to?

I am thinking of LSU.

7. What keeps you coming back to Get Schooled?

What keeps me coming back to Get Schooled is the text line. It feels personal, like having a trustworthy adult figure that I can ask questions about anything related to school. And, I always get a fast response with information that helps me.

8. What content topics do you like reading about most?

I really like reading about space, science and technology. It would be interesting to see more content related to this stuff!

9. Have you recommended Get Schooled to anyone (friends, family, other students)?

To be completely honest, I have not. But, I am more than happy to. You guys have helped me a lot!

10. What other content topics would you like to see on Get Schooled?

I would like to see more topics about Financial Aid and more topics about my state in general. I want to know what the minimum age requirement to work in Louisiana is, what the minimum wage is, how to get part time jobs around this area, and how I can build my resume and cover letter to get the jobs I want. These are things that they don’t teach in school.

11. Anything else you would like to add?

Thank you!

Meet our $1,000 No Essay Scholarship Winner for the Month of August

Get Schooled is happy to announce the winner of our August $1,000 No Essay Scholarship, SiYanne H. SiYanne is a senior at White Oak High School who's interested in pursuing a career in graphic design. Thanks for being a part of our Get Schooled community, SiYanne. Let's make your senior year of high school the best one yet!

1. How did you hear about Get Schooled?

My high school pushed it out during my freshman year. It was part of an attendance challenge that we were doing, and there was a badge we were all supposed to complete. Everyone was to log on to the website and check-in.

2. What’s your favorite thing about Get Schooled?

My favorite thing about Get Schooled is the discussion prompts and the info I get from the articles. I’ve always loved participating in the discussions, giving the information that helps me in tandem with the information that they provide, I feel like it’s really helping people, at least those who really read it. I also love the textline. I learned the GS Counselors are relatively young and really helpful, and are sometimes just fun to talk to about anything. I had plenty of conversations with the textline aside from academics, and I also got some good second opinions from the text line.

3. What does winning this prize mean to you?

Getting this scholarship is really encouraging. It’s like a positive reinforcement that pushes me forward and a reminder that there are resources and opportunities out there for me -- and a reminder that I really can do it.

4. What do you want to study in college? Why?

I went through an entire loop when I was deciding on what I wanted to be. I think I want to go into graphic design though. There’s this whole thing that I’ve followed since 8th grade that I am still looking into. Basically, they pay artists to come draw for them and then translate those drawings into other languages. I’m looking into being either one of those artists, one of those translators, or both.

5. When will you attend college?

Fall 2020.

6. Which college will you go to?

I am still deciding, but I am really thinking of Michigan State, or somewhere that’s renowned for the liberal arts. I’ve heard of Colby College, but I don’t know anything else about it beyond the name.

7. What keeps you coming back to Get Schooled?

I go on Get Schooled mostly because of the textline. When something I want drops or a raffle starts, or something else interesting comes up, I’ll probably click on it.

8. What has been your favorite badge so far?

I like the badges that have to do with Detroit. But I also like participating in the discussion boards. One of my favorite things to do on Get Schooled is writing on the boards. If I try something that works for me, then I’ll share it with other students and pray they read it.

9. What content topics do you like reading about most?

I would have to say astronomy. I know, it’s random. But yes, astronomy and everything having to do with NASA, celestial bodies, and theoretical proof.

10. Have you recommended Get Schooled to anyone (friends, family, other students)?

I have. I told my sibling who is in high school with me. I also told them about free prizes on Get Schooled. There is some good stuff up there.

11. What other content topics would you like to see on Get Schooled?

I would like to see more lists of scholarships or content that makes scholarship hunting easier. Even if it’s recommending an app or another site or helping people figure what they can get, I.e if they’re low income or small brown girls, or something, anything that lets people know they can take the SAT for free or helps them find scholarships is good content.

Yes, a live chat on the site to help us find things/send us the links to things we’re looking for is greatly welcome. Aside from that, thank you!! :)

Meet our $1,000 No Essay Scholarship Winner for the Month of July

Congratulations to our July $1,000 No Essay Scholarship winner, Joao P.. Joao is a relatively new member of our Get Schooled community, having only heard of us a few months before his graduation this year. He's been an active member since March 2019 and is really excited about everything that Get Schooled offers, from our content on college to our 1-on-1 support. Joao will be starting college at the University of Maryland - College Park this Fall and plans on majoring in physics.

How did you hear about Get Schooled

I heard about Get Schooled through my counselor. In March, before I was getting ready to graduate high school, my counselor suggested that I check out your website because it has a lot of good information about college and what to expect in my first year. She also mentioned that you were giving out free graduation cords.

What’s your favorite thing about Get Schooled?

My favorite thing about Get Schooled is all the information that you have. Going from high school to college is a hard transition and a lot of students don’t know what to expect. It can be a little scary. For me, having this information and perspective that Get Schooled provides is really helpful.

What does winning a $1,000 Scholarship mean to you?

Winning $1,000 from Get Schooled is incredibly important to me. It makes me feel a lot better about my financial status. I was really stressed about the cost of college - I still am a bit, but this really helps! I told my mom about it and we’re both very excited.

What do you want to study in college? Why?

I want to study physics because I’ve always loved science. When I took my first physics class in high school, I realized that this is what I wanted to do. I was really fascinated by how amazing the universe is - it’s controlled by rules that make up the science of physics. I love how small things such as atoms and molecules can make huge impacts on our lives. There’s still so much that we don’t know and I really want to learn as much about our universe as possible.

When will you attend college?

Fall 2019

Which college will you go to?

The University of Maryland - College Park

We see that you've been part of the Get Schooled since March 2019, what keeps you coming back?

I like all of the content pieces that Get Schooled has - the articles, quizzes, and discussion boards. I like seeing what other students have to say about their experience going to college. It gives me a good basis on what to expect and how I can make the most out of my own college experience.

What has been your favorite badge so far?

My favorite badge so far has been the Summer College Prep badge. I am an incoming freshman, so anything that helps me in my first year of college is great. I really liked the article on where to get cheap textbooks. I actually referred to that list and got my books at a really good price.

What content topics do you like reading about most?

As a high school senior, I really like reading content about college. I also like the articles that you have on job preparation. I will be applying for my first job this coming year and the article you have on how to prepare for an interview really helped me.

Have you recommended Get Schooled to anyone (friends, family, other students)?

Yes, I’ve recommended it to a few of my friends in high school so they can get ready for the next steps in college.

What other content topics would you like to see on Get Schooled?

A discussion board on recent events - things that are going on in the world. It’ll give students a chance to join the discussion and let their voices be heard.

Anything else you would like to add.

Thank you so much for giving me this scholarship.  I really appreciate it.

Meet our $1,000 No Essay Scholarship Winner for the Month of June

Congratulations to our June $1,000 No Essay Scholarship winner, T’Yanna M. T’Yanna has been a part of the Get Schooled community since 2015 and has accumulated over 100,000 lifetime points. She recently graduated from Peachtree Ridge High School and plans on studying computer science and marketing at Kennesaw State University.

How did you hear about Get Schooled?

I heard about Get Schooled my freshman year of high school through an advisor who took us to a computer lap and suggested we sign up. She thought that it would be beneficial for my class to try it out and see if there was anything on the program that might answer any questions we might have had about school or jobs. Get Schooled really helped me get through high school and answered any questions I might have had regarding college.

What’s your favorite thing about Get Schooled?

My favorite thing about Get Schooled is that there are always new topics to learn about on the website. Whether you’re on there looking for college advice, learning about relieving stress, or even how to study, there’s always a new piece of information waiting for you when you log into your account. Logging in to see new content gets you excited and makes you want to educate yourself on things you never thought you would need to know like financial aid for example.

What does winning a $1,000 Scholarship mean to you?

Winning this scholarship means a lot to me. I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders a little bit and shows that anyone can win a scholarship regardless of GPA or status because I’ve struggled with that as well. It encourages me to go even harder at the education that I've been able to receive and I’m grateful for the opportunities people have given me to be successful in my craft.

What do you want to study in college? Why?

I want to study computer science and marketing. I know that sounds like a lot, but I love the idea of learning about the inner workings of a computer and how amazing technology has advanced over the years. You’re always learning something new and experimenting with new technology that could also have an opportunity to be put on the market in the near future. I also love the idea of coming up with a new idea and being able to sell it. It’s good to know the business side of things as well so your product has a chance of being successful.

When will you attend college?

I will attend college in the fall of 2019 and excited to be able to start on a new foot and experience life in my own way.

Which college will you go to?

I’ll be attending Kennesaw State University in Georgia under the Applied Computer Science Program.

We see that you've been part of the Get Schooled community since 2015, what keeps you coming back?

Get Schooled is an excellent tool to have in your toolbox in my opinion. It has helped me in ways I probably wouldn’t have known by just going to my counselor and asking. Get Schooled is like a library for information on college, how to make a resume, how to ace an interview, and so much more. Without Get Schooled I truly would’ve been lost when it was time to apply for colleges.

What has been your favorite badge so far?

My favorite badge is the Federal Student Loans one. It helped me learn about the difference between the loans how to make sure I pick the right one for me. Nobody wants to have loans, but it’s best to learn about the ones that will benefit you in the end.

What content topics do you like reading about most?

I enjoy educating myself on topics about college and jobs the most. They taught me the appropriate etiquette I must have when I go into my interviews, what I need to bring, and how to sell myself to get a job efficiently. I also learned about how the FAFSA works, other alternatives to college, and how to pay for college. It was great being able to go on there and find something to learn every day

Have you recommended Get Schooled to anyone (friends, family, other students)?

I’ve recommended it to my sister a few times. I think the best way to get their attention is to mention the rewards store. I think she’ll try it and hopefully, she’ll see the benefits from it as well just like I have.

What other content topics would you like to see on Get Schooled?

I see a lot of options about college life on Get Schooled, but I would love to see more content about high school. Not everyone goes to college, but almost everyone has the option to go to high school and there is a lot to learn from those four years before college. Maybe even get actual seniors or alumni to give advice to kids who are just starting out or are having a hard time.

Anything else you would like to add?

If you are considering joining Get Schooled don’t keep thinking and just sign up. You’ll be glad you did and I promise you that you will absolutely benefit from this choice. Also, the rewards store has really good prizes, so you’re not wasting any time by looking through the activities.

Meet our $1,000 No Essay Scholarship Winner for the Month of May

Rogelio has been an active member of the Get Schooled community since 2017. Over the past two years, he’s accumulated over 200,000 lifetime points and completed 119 badges. Rogelio recently graduated from Ernest Righetti High School and plans on starting college in Fall 2019. He plans on majoring in filmmaking and hopes to one day become a movie director.

How has Get Schooled helped you in your journey through high school?

Get Schooled gave me a lot of advice on how to apply for jobs and how to apply to college. They encouraged me to follow my passion for filmmaking when I shared it with them through text. At times I was hesitant about it as a career choice, but they really advocated that I pursue something I was passionate about. I’ll be starting my first filmmaking class this fall!

What keeps you coming back?

Get Schooled has a lot of great resources that really helped me during high school. I really liked the career resources and quizzes. I think that the badges are also pretty cool. TBH, I really like the idea of earning points and being able to redeem them for rewards. My favorite content pieces on Get Schooled are the badges on Spiderman: Homecoming and the Ninja Turtle badge.

Did you share it with your family? How did they feel?

I will share it with my family. I think they will be really excited to hear that I won a scholarship.

Is this the first scholarship you won?

Yes. This is the first ever scholarship that I won. I am really happy and excited about it. I’ve applied for a few before but never really heard anything back. It’s awesome that Get Schooled texted me to let me know that I won. I was ecstatic and I am really thankful.

Is there a particular type of film that you want to study? What inspires you about film?

I really want to focus on SciFi and Fantasy. I really like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and superhero movies in general. For me, these genres open up possibilities that aren’t yet possible in the real world. The saying, “your imagination is the limit” really is true with these genres. I can create my own world with my own rules. Life can get pretty boring sometimes, with school and work and chores, and it gets repetitive. With these types of movies, you can create a life that’s not so boring. For example, in Star Wars, you can move things with your mind and wield a laser sword. These are the things that inspire me and make me want to follow this path.

You were part of a challenge that asked you to fill out the FAFSA. Did this challenge help you?

Yes. The challenge did help me. It gave me a better understanding of the FAFSA process and how it’s done. When I was confused about something, I texted in and someone was always there to help answer my questions.

What are your favorite movies, and what kind of movie content would you like to see?

I would really like to see more Star Wars content. It would be really cool if there was a badge for the new movie coming out, the Rise of Luke Skywalker.

Anything you would like to add?

I am really excited to receive this scholarship and I want to thank Get Schooled for giving it to me. It will really help with my tuition for film school.
