Creating An FSA ID
Last updated January 6, 2020
FSA IDs are used to confirm your identity when accessing federal financial aid information, and to sign your FAFSA electronically. You’re required to create an FSA ID to access, sign, and complete the FAFSA. If you’re a dependent student, your parents will also need one to sign the FAFSA. Fortunately, making an FSA ID is really simple!
Here’s how to create an FSA ID
1. Go to fafsa.gov
2. Click the “FAFSA Apply for Aid” tab
3. Click “Create an “FSA ID”
4. Create a log-in and password
Be sure to write your log-in info down so you don’t forget it! Parents and students can not use the same email address.
5. Social Security number
Next, you’ll be asked to provide your name and social security number exactly as they appear on your Social Security Card.
6. Address and mobile number
Then, you’ll be prompted to provide your mailing address, and your phone if you would like to register your phone. Parents and students can not use the same mobile number.
7. Challenge questions
You’ll then be asked to set up “challenge questions” to answer in case you ever need to retrieve your account. Be sure to make note of the question and answers you input here.
8. Ensure that all info you entered is correct and press submit!
If there's an error with any of your personal info, it will cause issues later on after you submit your FAFSA, so be sure to verify all your info is correct.
9. You're done!
